Celebrating King Moshoeshoe Day

The 11th of March to commemorate the day of Moshoeshoe’s death. Moshoeshoe Day is a national holiday in Lesotho celebrated every year.

Military Capability:

  • Moshoeshoe was a true African leader who united the decentralized chiefdoms of the neighboring people.
  • Moshoeshoe was a famous warrior who defended his kingdom from the great Zulu warrior Tshaka.
  • Moshoeshoe was a famous fighter who defended his kingdom from the colonialists who sought to invade the African land.
  • Moshoeshoe waged one of the most effective resistance efforts to colonialism from the Dutch Boer settlers and British Empire over many decades.
  • Moshoeshoe never suffered a major military defeat and retained most of his kingdom.
  • Moshoeshoe fought to preserve all of his culture.

Economic Policy & Development:

Mafisa system

  • In the agro based economy the mafisa system involved rich men lending one or two cattle to the poor who would look after the cattle and use them to plough the land.
  • The mafisa system created a sense of kinship among the Sotho people and created economic equity among the Sotho.

Leadership Style: Pitso System

  • The Pitso system was a consultative congress that advised Moshoeshoe on how to manage the affairs of the Sotho.
  • Decisions were made by Moshoeshoe after counsel from the congress made up of advisers.
