Diamonds v. Human Rights: Who Prevails?

The European Union has all of a sudden decided to remove sanctions on a list of 51 Zimbabweans and 20 companies previously accused of bankrolling and supporting the repressive government of Robert Mugabe. Last time we checked the people on this list had not changed their allegiance. In fact most of them are more entrenched than ever in ZANU-PF politics.

However it is worth noting that diamonds were discovered in Zimbabwe and have begun to flow into the world supply. These diamonds have enriched ZANU-PF officials and the European businessmen who they are dealing with the most. Hence it comes as no surprise that the EU has all of a sudden forgotten why these people had been placed under sanctions in the first place. I guess when its a comparison between diamonds and human rights, the former prevails. These expensive gems were the forces behind the wars in Sierra Leone, Liberia and the DRC. They really are just that powerful.
