Mureza: African Car Brand to Launch this Week
A new car brand called Mureza is launching in Africa this week. Mureza Auto Group is a collaboration between Zimbabwean Tatenda Mungofa and a group of other Africans, the SAIPA Group of Iran and funding from the United Arab Emirates
Mureza, a new African car brand, will make its debut at Automechanika Johannesburg, which takes place at Expo Centre, Nasrec, from 18-21 September. Mureza initially has a joint venture with the SAIPA Group in Iran for platform-sharing and the supply of some of the other major components, but Mureza’s ultimate objective is to design and manufacture vehicles in Africa for African drivers.
The word Mureza means Flag and we want to be the flag wavers for an indigenous African motor industry. We want to be like Henry Ford who replaced horses with affordable cars. In our case it will be replacing imported used cars with affordable cars made in Africa – Tatenda Mungofa
The first model, the Prim8 (pronounced Primate), is a crossover/hatchback which will be assembled in the Automotive Supplier Park in Rosslyn, South Africa, and later at the Willowvale assembly plant in Zimbabwe and in the former Hyundai plant in Botswana. The new business is being backed by funders in the United Arab Emirates.
The car is expected to cost about ~$13,500 (USD).
