Nancy Abu-Bonsrah: Making History at John Hopkins Neurosurgery

Nancy Abu-Bonsrah made history in March when she was accepted as the first black female neurosurgeon resident at John Hopkins School of Medicine’s neurological surgery program. The highly selective program accepts just two to five residents, and is ranked second in the country.

“It’s a humbling experience,” she said. “It’s not something I expected to happen. It provides a lot of responsibility … to mentor other minorities.”

This summer she began her residency at the prestigious institution. Nancy Abu-Bonsrah is a native of Ghana who moved to Maryland about 11 years ago. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from John Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2017 and a bachelor of science in Biochemistry/ Chemistry from Mount St. Mary’s University in in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Abu-Bonsrah hope to be able to go back to Ghana and help in building sustainable surgical infrastructure in the country.

Other notable alumni from this program include the current Secretary of Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Dr. Ben Carson.

Nancy is married to Kwabena Yamoah, an aspiring Physician who is studying at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
